In life we need to take breaks. We need to hit the pause button for just a moment so that we can reset. These breaks are vital in building the muscles and stamina needed for the next leg of the journey. They give us time to reflect on how far we've come so that we can celebrate our present location.
My son and I climbed Stone Mountain in Georgia. Although this wasn't our first time, it somehow felt different. Familiar yet unfamiliar at the same time. Instead of comparing it to the last time we climbed it, I just let the experience unfold its own uniqueness. Despite my determination to get to the top, I allowed myself to take a few breaks and simply be. Oh, I needed to catch my breath a couple of times, too lol.
On one of our rest breaks we met a lady that decided that she would go no further. She sent her teenage son on ahead and she was waiting for him to come back down so they could go home. I told her that she wasn't that far from the top of the mountain and that she could come with us. She agreed and we climbed. Caleb and I stopped when she stopped. We climbed some more. At our final rest spot Caleb yelled "Come back!" She replied with 2 words that will always kill a dream, "I can't." With that she went back down the mountain to join her son and we continued on to accomplish what we set out to do.
The only difference between she and I was the word "not." I believed that I could climb that mountain no matter how difficult it was. Sure, this wasn't my first time, but even then I had no doubt that I would get to the top. This woman, despite her best intentions, let doubt infiltrate her thoughts and sike her out. She appeared to be able bodied and in good health. The only thing that stopped her from getting up that mountain was her. SHE got in her own way.
I've been there before. I would start something and then abandon it because I got scared. Yet there would be a constant whisper that called me to revisit the task. Call it drive, gumption or faith, but I truly believe that I can do anything. With training and proper guidance there's nothing that I cannot figure out. Now I may not be the best at it, but I'll always give it my all.
I'm no better or worse than the woman we met on the mountain. In fact, I am her and she is me. She is simply my shadow. If I had put a period in my life's story every time I thought about giving up instead of putting a comma there, then I would be exactly like her. Life would be much simpler if we all just put a comma instead of period and wrote our plans out in pencil instead of in ink.
There are few guarantees in life. Except of course that at some point the final curtain will come down and we leave the body that we're in. It's time to cancel and delete every "can't" from your being. Replace it with "can" and "will" in due season.
Every mountain is climbed one step at a time. What 1 step will you take today to achieve your goal? Leave a comment below and I'll hold space for your intention.
