It was all a hoax! I'm referring to the baby naming contest where a woman claimed that she would let the public name her child for a $5K payoff. It was bogus. That's good news and bad news simultaneously. It's great because a child's name should be chosen with supreme care and forethought. The naming process should be taken more seriously. Every parent wants to give their child the best opportunities possible. Names matter.
As a child, most of us said "sticks and stones will break my
bones, but words will never hurt me". Then, we grew up and realized that was a lie. Words do have power. Words hurt. Especially, the words from our loved ones. It's the names we were called that play in our minds over and over and over, not the sticks thrown. The names are causing many to settle and suffer decades later.
I put in a lot of thought when I chose all of my son's names. When he gets older, he may decide that he doesn't like them. That's fine. If so, he can change his name. But, he'll know that I chose a name of great biblical significance and strength. At least, he seems to like his name right now. Whenever he's asked his name, he says his full name. It makes me smile every time. Already at age 3, he displays pride when he says it.
Ages 0-7 are the most important years in a person's life. One of the first words a child is taught is their name. Names are important. We identify with our names. Our name is what we answer to. People don't name their child "Sorrow", "Loser", or "Lame" today. Of course not. There was Jabez in 1 Chronicles 4:9. Today there are some very unique names that you may not have chosen. But, the point is that the parents put some degree of thought into it. So yes, it's wonderful that it was really a hoax.
On the other hand, it's so incredibly sad that people would be more concerned with money than their values. Your character shouldn't be for sell. It's also sad that we gave them exactly what they wanted. Well, almost. They got tons of publicity, but no money. On top of that, there were people who actually entered the contest for real after it went viral. What a shame!
Our society is so screwed up, we think money has value. We've forgotten that it's just paper. We have the real value. Every man, woman, and child is valuable. There's power in a person's name. That's why baby name books are so popular. Mothers want their child's name to mean something positive. Choosing a child's name is priceless and ... always should be.
