As an entrepreneur you wear at least a dozen hats at one time. You handle tech issues, customer complaints, design programs, set pricing guidelines, create graphics, and so forth. If you worked 24 hours straight your to-do list would still be incomplete. There's always something to do, tweak or create. The gears in your mind seem to be constantly in motion. When you should be sleeping you're actually just thinking with your eyes closed. A powerful purpose and vision can be exhilarating. It can also be down right exhausting.
There's one hat that entrepreneurs keep pristine and tucked away in a box. They only pull it out when they're at their breaking point. This is the hat of parent. Yes, no matter how old you are you need to parent yourself. You need a firm voice to tell you "that you've done your best for the day and now it's time to go to sleep. Start fresh tomorrow." You need to give yourself a pat on the back for showing up and playing full out. Yes, you deserve a trophy because you've overcome some obstacles that have taken others out of the game entirely. You need unconditional love.
It is not anyone else's responsibility to give these things to you. Not your spouse or significant other. Not your parents. Not your children. Not your best friend. Not your coach. It is solely yours. It doesn't matter if you had the most loving parents or not. Your parents did the best that they could at their level of awareness. No one can read your mind. You're inside of your head and you know what you need (at differing degrees), so give it to yourself.
If you think you don't need to parent yourself, you are wrong. I hate to break it to you, but you're already parenting yourself without even realizing it. Pay attention to how you talk to yourself and treat yourself. You're an abusive parent if you are constantly berating and belittling yourself for slip-ups. You're a bully parent if you always pit yourself against others and point out all of the ways that you don't measure up. You're a neglectful parent if you never do anything for yourself or never spend time enjoying your own company.
What type of parent are you? Without judgement hold the mirror up, look yourself in the eyes, and answer that question.
My son has helped me to better parent myself. He's great at parenting himself. He acknowledges himself when he does a good job and he tells himself that it's okay when things don't go quite the way he planned. He may experience moments of sadness, but he doesn't attach his sense of self or identity to the results. He's only 6! Now, if I could get him to parent himself when it's time to clean up his room that would truly be the icing on the cake lol. I could feel that you needed a moment of comic relief there.
Now that you have this new-found awareness you can change how you parent yourself. How much more productive and effective would you be as the CEO of your company if you parented yourself with unconditional love?
From my deck, Angel Messages for the Purposeful Entrepreneur, this week's cards are: Apologize, Ground Your Energy, Reward Yourself, and Blessing in Disguise.
