Guys have man-caves and moms have...the bathroom. It's the only room in the house where we can be alone. The shower may be running, but we are actually enjoying a guilty pleasure treat or listening to our favorite playlist. The running water is better than any Do Not Disturb sign. You don't have to share your guilty pleasure or worry about anyone else. The bathroom is our sacred place.
What if you could have time to yourself outside of the bathroom (while your kids are awake), would you be interested? Well, it is possible to get time to yourself while the kids are awake.
Choose an item that will signal Mommy's Quiet Time to your family. Don't just choose any old thing. Select something that makes you feel pretty, but you don't wear that often. It can be a scarf, necklace, etc. I use a tiara from the Dollar Store. I feel like a queen every time I put it on.
Set a schedule and stick to it.
The only way to make time for yourself a priority is to schedule it. At least 15 minutes every day should be set aside. You wouldn't dare miss a doctor's appointment. Give your appointment for Mommy's Quiet Time the same value. Be consistent and eventually you'll create a new habit.
Explain the system to your family and explain again.
Have a conversation with your family about the importance of personal time for everyone. Encourage them to take care of themselves. Tell them how much you love them. Explain that you love yourself, too. Walk your family through the process. Repetition is the key to learning, so walk them through it again and again.
Hiding in the bathroom and staying up until 2 a.m. is only going to cause burnout. We give and give until we drop or lose our cool. Forget about what you've heard or seen. Taking care of yourself isn't selfish, it's a matter of life and death. Stress and self-neglect can lead to serious health issues. You alone are responsible for meeting your needs. You know yourself better than anyone in the world. Everyone needs time to themselves to think and relax, especially moms. Your personal time is for you to take care of your needs. It's not the time to plan out your weekly menu or pay bills. Fill the time with activities you enjoy. Read a magazine, do your nails, meditate.
Please leave a comment and let me know what your Mommy Quiet Time signal will be.
