I am totally anti-New Year's revolutions. I know this is not a popular opinion, however the data speaks for itself. 80% of people give up on their New Year's resolutions by February. Their optimism for a new start unfortunately turns into a vicious cycle of insecurity, feelings of inadequacy, and blame. I don't know about you, but this is not how I want to start off a day, much less an entire year.
So how do I accomplish my goals and aspirations? Well, I write S.M.A.R.T. (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, Time-bound) goals quarterly rather than annually in my planner. I've found that planning out my entire year at once was too overwhelming. Breaking my year into quarters is much more feasible and allows me more flexibility. This goal setting system is explained in the book The 12-Week Year by Brian P. Moran. If you haven't read it, then I highly recommend this book.
It's not enough to write down your goals and visualize them. Creating a successful system to accomplish your goals is what really moves the needle. I'm sure you've seen this play out with your clients as well as in your own life. You can have two clients where all things considered are equal, but and one client takes what you taught them and flourishes. On the other hand, the other client remains stuck and stagnant. What's the difference between the two? Ultimately, it comes down to the steps they took daily to execute their goals. You need both goals and systems. Most goals without a system are never achieved. A system's success is evaluated by the goal or objective it was meant to accomplish.
If your goal this year is to become a full-time entrepreneur this year, then your daily actions are going to help make this a reality. It's also really important that your WHY is strong enough to support your goal. Every goal comes its own unique set of challenges. Consequently, it'll be your WHY that pulls you through those dark moments and strengthen your resolve.
I'd love to know what some of your goals and systems are for this new year. If you haven't set any, then there's no time like the present - it's not too late! Sharing your goals can help them manifest, so comment below.
